Urmia University of Medical Sciences (also known as Urmia Medical Sciences University (UMSU)) is a public medical university located in the city of Urmia, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran.

The Institute of Medicine, founded by Joseph Cochrane in 1878 at the present site of the city campus of Urmia University, is regarded as the first attempt to establish an institution of higher learning in Urmia. For establishing Iran's “First Contemporary Medical College” Dr. Cochran is often praised.

 

Urmia University's website credits Cochran for “reducing infant mortality in the region” and establishing one of Iran's first modern hospitals in Urmia. The Cochrane Faculty of Medicine was founded and many others, namely Drs. Wright, Hommels, van Noorden and Miller. They lived in Urmia all their lives.

In 1980, the Faculty of Medical Sciences was established at Urmia University. In 1985 the school was separated from Urmia University under the supervision of the Iranian Ministry of Health, and a new university was established under the name Urmia University of Medical Sciences.

The university has seven schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Paramedical, Health, Nursing and Midwifery, Dentistry, and International Branch) and manages all public hospitals (including Imam Khomeini, Shahid Motahari, Taleghani, Razi
